Doctor dies scuba diving

The death of a Clinton doctor is being called a terrible loss.

Dr. Jan Raczycki, a 49-year-old family doctor, died in a scuba diving accident on Lake Huron Sunday.

“He will be missed by all of us,” said Kim Van Wyk, a registered nurse who worked with Raczycki on a five-doctor Clinton Family Health Team.

Raczycki practiced for 15 years in Clinton. He leaves behind a 22-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter.

His wife succumbed to cancer several years ago.

“He was a very proud father of his two kids,” said Van Wyk.

“He had a great sense of humour and he had a love of music. He was a fan of the most outrageous bands which he would share with us.”

Dr. Jan Raczycki was pulled from the lake near Tobermory about 3 p.m. Sunday.

He had been diving at the wreck, The King, with a commercial diving boat.

A graduate of the University of Toronto in 1986, Raczycki has been a doctor for 25 years and was head of the doctor recruitment committee in Clinton.

An autopsy is being conducted today.

The Canadian Coast Guard, Fathom Five National Marine Park and OPP are investigating.
