Firefighter dies in Shore diving accident

Philadelphia firefighter Lee Scarborough was on vacation last week, enjoying the beach and ocean at the North Jersey Shore’s Belmar.

This week, relatives are planning a funeral for Scarborough, who died Saturday of injuries he sustained when he dove into the surf.

“It’s a terrible tragedy,” said Bill Gault, president of Local 22, the Philadelphia firefighters’ union. “He was a good man.”

Scarborough, 58, had been with the Philadelphia Fire Department since 1974, Gault said. He leaves a wife and four children, one of whom is also a Philadelphia firefighter.
