Mariner’s Museum`s new exhibit opens

A partnership between Huntington Ingalls Industries ‘ Newport News Shipbuilding division and the Mariner’s Museum has resulted in a collection of 51 photographs that document 125 years of Newport News Shipbuilding.

The photographs are now in an exhibit called “Always Good Ships” at the Mariners’ Museum.

“This is the ability for us to share with the community what the shipyards meant and what it means to the people and city of Newport News and anybody who comes to the Mariners Museum,” said Matt Mulherin the President of Newport News Shipbuilding.

From Navy carriers and subs to commercial vessels, the photos give an idea of what’s involved in building seaworthy ships.

Four of the staff photographers involved were on hand for Thursday opening. John Whalen is one of those photographers, he initially started in the nuclear pipe department.

“I’m always looking for that way to show an object that gives it a different twist that would bring the audiences’ eye into it and give them as much pleasure as I found in that object when I first photographed it,” said Whalen.

Exhibit is open to the public beginning on August 6. It runs through the end of October.
