Shipping strike ends

The strike laying up seven ships and 50 workers in the Twin Ports is over and officers have returned to work.

Ship Officers and Stewards, who are part of the American Maritime Officers Union, had been picketing since Monday when their contract with American Steamship Co. expired. The new contract hasn’t been resolved, but union officers will work under their old contract until it is.

The dispute in the new contract is over the reduction of up to 59 positions, health care and pensions.

The strike had laid up 14 ships around the Great Lakes and put 140 officers and stewards out of work.

The American Steamship Co., based in Williamsville, N.Y., is the largest Great Lakes shipping company and has 17 vessels.

In the Twin Ports, the ships haul coal and iron ore pellets.
