Young man dies after Diving in pool

Police have identified a 21-year-old man who died after diving into the shallow end of a motel swimming pool early Thursday morning.

Brent McWhorter was out celebrating a friend’s birthday around 3:20 a.m. Thursday at the Comfort Inn at 1501 Demonbreun Street.

Witnesses told police they saw the victim dive head first into an area of the pool clearly marked as three feet deep. By the time emergency medical crews responded to the scene, witnesses said a nurse and doctor were already working to revive the victim.

“When officers arrived at this location, several bystanders performing CPR on the victim,” said Captain Sebastian Gourdin with the Metro Nashville Police Department.

The man was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

McWhorter was from Hendersonville in Sumner County.

Officials said the pool should have been closed at the time of the incident.
